Essential oils…Essentially the right choice!

Here’s some info about essential oils, why you choose them, and to let you know, that you should NOT use synthetics or “fragrance”, which can hide a long list of toxic chemicals.

Essential oils are concentrated liquids that contain the strong aroma compounds of various plants. They are typically extracted from the plant through distillation and give a highly fragrant scent if their pure form. They are taken from various parts of the plant, including flower petals, leaves, twigs, bark or skin of a fruit from the plant. The process of extraction can be a lengthy one and has to be done properly to maintain the integrity of the oil. While some cheaper or synthetic versions may be available, they do not have the same properties as the pure and natural essential oils.

Essential oils are widely used to naturally add scent to cosmetics, soaps, cleaners, etc. Depending on the scent and the plant that they come from, different oils are used to serve different purposes. Each oil features its own distinct qualities and aromas, and frequently used in conjunction with others to create a specific result, such as soothing anxiety and stress, easing nausea, or relieving headaches. For instance, lavender and chamomile essential oils can be used in baby care products to provide a natural calming effect.
While they can be most costly as an ingredient, it takes very few drops of an essential oil to create a positive effect on any formulation and provides a great alternative to using fragrance oils and perfumes.  At ForeverGreen, we are proud to say that we only use pure essential oils in all of our products.

Breast Cancer & the Non-Toxic Revolution:

Please click to watch this 2 minute video I found. See how you can easily CHOOSE to reduce &/or eliminate your 365 days per year exposure to toxic synthetic chemicals found in household products, as well as other environmental & lifestyle choices, which is thought to be the leading cause of Breast Cancer, asthma, other breathing problems, & so many more dis-eases.

My mother-in-law is a Breast Cancer survivor. I have been following a green path for nearly 12 year, if not more, since becoming a mother. This video explains, exactly, why I joined with OnlyGreen (closed in June 2012) shortly after finding & researching their products & ingredients. They are 100% Natural, Safe, Eco Friendly, & Biodegradable. Free from synthetics, fragrances, dyes, and hormone disrupting ingredients.  I will also admit that I signed up purely to get a discount and shop from home, but it didn’t take long to start making green by going green.

Join the non-toxic revolution!

I would like to thank www.GoodGirlGoneGreen.com for her post. Check out her website. Originally, I found a post she made about “No-Pooing” (eliminating shampoo) & have been hooked on her posts since. Enjoy!

In light of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, I wanted to remind you about OG’s partnership with the Canadian Breast Cancer Support Fund (OG is no longer in business) to provide a financial subsidy for breast cancer patients who cannot afford to purchase a wig.

Soy wax candles are completely non-toxic, unlike paraffin wax based candles which emit 11 toxins according to the American Lung Association, 2 of which are known carcinogens. Our candles are made with 100% non-GMO soy and have a burning time of more than 40 hours.

Do you know the Benefits of Mineral Make-Up?

Understanding these benefits of mineral make-up will ease your mind knowing that what you put on is as important as what you put in.

An average woman will absorb 5 lbs of personal care products each year.

Every day, more and more consumers are becoming aware of the impact their beauty products have on their personal health. One of the current hot topics for many women is finding the health benefits in switching to a mineral based cosmetics line. Although most women understand that minerals are healthier to use, they may not fully know why.

So what are the benefits to mineral based cosmetics?

Natural mineral make-up is composed of pure, cosmetic-grade minerals such as mica, titanium oxide, and zinc oxide. They are free from fragrances, animal by-products, talc, fillers, parabens, and binders which are commonly found in ordinary chemical based cosmetics.

Mineral make-up doesn’t support the growth of bacteria, meaning mineral make-up is less likely to become contaminated than other makeup types.
Since many of the minerals also naturally reflect light, they also help aid in minor sun protection and can reduce the appearance of aging. Mineral cosmetics can be a great choice for people with skin allergies and irritations, because it is much gentler than chemical makeup. Mineral make-up provides excellent coverage, which helps to create flawless-looking skin.

At OnlyGreen, we are proud to offer our Opal line of mineral based cosmetics. (IMPORTANT UPDATE:  OnlyGreen  has closed their doors since June 2011 but their supplier was PureAnada Canada and here’s their website: http://www.pureanada.ca/ )

This line has been formulated using all natural ingredients and is made in Canada.

Thanks for reading. Comment’s or questions are welcomed. Thanks & have a Green day, Every day =)

How to keep your cosmetic brushes clean, naturally.

 Eco Tip:

Bacteria free brushes, naturally!

Cleaning makeup brushes is an important task that most women overlook. As
you use your cosmetic brushes, they accumulate not only makeup, but also the oils, dead skin cells and other products that may be on your face. They can also attract dirt and dust particles from the air around them. This can create a happy home for harmful bacteria to grow and thrive. To help keep your cosmetic brushes clean and healthy, you have to remove the buildup on a regular basis. However, doing so naturally can be a bit tricky.
There are a lot of conventional brush cleaners available on the market, but then you are simply replacing the bacteria build-up with a chemical build-up! Using a natural brush cleaning solution is the best way to keep your brushes free and clear of anything! To clean your cosmetic brushes, I recommend using 1 drop of ForeverGreen’s House Keeper mixed with 1/2 cup of water & 2-3 drops of essential oil (lemon, orange, &/or tea tree because they all have disinfecting properties), then gently pat them onto a dry microfiber towel and let them sit to air dry. This should be repeated at least once a week in order to maintain the quality and life of your brush set.

My very important tips: NEVER soak your brushes and saturate the tips past the metal or it could ruin your set. Dry your brushes by pressing them back into their natural shape, then placing them over the edge of the counter to avoid the flat effect.

10 Reasons Why Going Organic Makes a Difference

“I’d like to draw attention to the concept of the “Butterfly Effect”. Developed by American meteorologist Edward Lorenz, the logic behind the Butterfly Effect states that even small, seemingly unimportant actions nevertheless have tremendous and powerful effects down the line.”

I found this quote in an article that a friend had posted on facebook. It also reminds me to inform you that EVERY purchase YOU make, is a vote. For example: If you don’t mind saving money by purchasing cheap lotion, shampoo, cleaners, etc. then the message you’re actually sending is that you want to save money by purchasing toxic products for your household.

Fragrance Oils vs Essential Oils in Products

The main issue with synthetic fragrances is the mystery behind what exactly they are. The synthetic fragrances used in cosmetics can have as many as 200 ingredients. There is no way to know what the chemicals are, since on the label it will simply read “fragrance.” Some problems caused by these chemicals include headaches, dizziness, rash, hyperpigmentation, violent coughing, vomiting, skin irritation, etc.

Although these fragrances are usually only added in very small amounts, when used in personal care products, they are applied directly to the consumer’s skin.

“Fragrance is considered a trade secret, so companies don’t have to tell us what’s in it – often dozens or even hundreds of synthetic chemical compounds. Almost half the products in Skin Deep contain the generic term “fragrance,” from shampoos and deodorants to lotions and shaving creams. Even “unscented” products may contain masking fragrances, which are chemicals used to cover up the odor of other chemicals.” (www.safecosmetics.org).

Choose personal care items that are scented using pure extracts and essential oils like all of the ForeveGreen House & Home products as well as a complete line of over 100 pure and blended TRUessence essential oils.
